Thanks for the concern, Ra. While there have been some reports of a Chinese person being fined for using a VPN in China (although nothing worse than a fine unless they were doing something illegal), there have been no known cases of a foreigner being fined or getting in serious trouble for using a VPN. At one point I was asked to delete the VPN, but I just reinstalled it later.

I recommend you use a home internet connection in China, not your mobile internet. Most of these plans don’t cap your data usage and it will be plenty fast enough to stream videos on the Firestick.

Hmm…I’m not sure what to tell you. If I were you, I would delete the VPN on the firestick and then try to connect to the internet without the VPN installed. If that still doesn’t work, you’ll at least know that it doesn’t have anything to do with the VPN.

That’s a good point, George. Thanks for sharing. Believe it or not, I’ve been able to use Amazon on some US-based VPN servers (although not all).

i apologize for my previous comment as I just realized that the message from amazon regarding the vpn appears only when connected to a non-u.s. vpn server. The service does indeed work when connected to a U.S. server. As a suggestion it might be worth mentioning in the original article that u.s. server must be used to access u.s. content (although to be fair this should’ve been obvious to me) to avoid future confusion.
